“We cannot hold a torch to light another’s path without brightening our own.” -Ben Sweetland (Photo by Karen Glosser)
Seeing your new photo art each day is inspiring. Can you tell us about your latest artwork?
Can you explain your artistic process? Which artists/photographers are you influenced by?
Because I always have my camera ready, I take a lot of pictures. I usually don’t go out looking for certain subjects or topics. When I see something that strikes me, I take a few shots. Then, periodically, or when I am designing a new collection, I go back through and I often notice themes running through my photos. I use this as a jumping off point for design inspiration.
Can you explain your artistic process? Which artists/photographers are you influenced by?
I am greatly influenced by art. Color is a huge inspiration for me, so I love to spend time in galleries and museums, online, or reading books. My favorite artists are Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still. Their use of color is masterful. I also find great design and life inspiration from Simon Alcantara, a genius jewelry designer. As far as photography?
I find great inspiration from the photos of the amazing Frank Cunha III !!!
Have you ever considered publishing an ebook of your work?
As a matter of fact, no. I never have. Hmmmm….
I am glad we put that thought in your head!

1) When did you first get started on social media?
I don´t know really. What I do know is that it all started with Facebook for sure.
2) How has it changed your life?
Very much. When you understand Social Media, you realize there is another way to seeing and conceiving communication.
And different ways to do it!
3) What are your favorite top 3 sites? Name a few others you like.
Every day there are new sites. Some of them you don´t even know for what were created.
But I guess my top 3 are: Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest. ( I use a lot google +and youtoube) and one thing is important to say for us, if you don´t have a smartphone stay at home.
@LuisDurazo (A Glimpse Into How Other Architects See the World Around Them)
Posted: January 20, 2012 | Author: fc3arch | Filed under: Architecture, More FC3, Photography, Social Media | Tags: Architect, architectural, Architecture, Expose, Instagram, JustArch, Luis, Photography, Social Media | 4 Comments »Recently I met an aspiring Architect on Instagram who is able to evoke powerful Architectural images through his photographs.
When I asked Luis Alfonso Durazo Ballesteros (AKA @luisdurazo on Instagram) whether he would like to be featured on my blog he humbly accepted.
The main reason I like to share his work is because it offers my audience a greater understanding about who I am (as an Architect/Artist) and how I see the world.
Although Luis is able to capture his subjects in a different way, there are similarities that probably exist because of our similar educational backgrounds.
The following is a sampling of his work. The captions were provided by Luis in his own words.
-
- I found this while I was waiting for a traffic light to turn green in Downtown Edmonton. Instantly loved the perspective.
-
- Looking up to a couple street lights on 104th Ave. and 109th St. Downtown Edmonton. Things can be very different when seen from the right perspective.
-
- A medium-sized bell contrasting against the sky in front of the “All Saints’ Anglican Cathedral”. Edmonton AB.
-
- Took this photo from the “inside” of a sculpture located outside of the Experience Music Project in Seattle.
-
- Experience Music Project in Seattle designed by Architect Frank Gehry. Textures and colors are unbelievable.
-
- Downtown Seattle was an incredible place to walk around. I loved its mixture of historic, contemporary, and cultural sensations.
-
- A thin line of sky separates these two buildings on 104th Street. Downtown Edmonton. It’s actually not that easy to see if you’re not paying enough attention.
As you can see from this gallery Luis is able to elegantly capture how Architects see the world around them — symmetries, colors, shapes. He is able to convey emotion of mind and spirit through his unique vision and creativity.
I am honored to be on of Luis’ colleagues and I look forward to seeing more of his work as he continues to explore, design, and construct the world around him and us.

I Love My Architect is primarily about Art & Architecture and sometimes we take a side trip to document some cool photo gear, poetry, or other interests. Once I read Lori’s posts on Instagram and saw her transformation I wanted to share her journey with you all. Over the past 12 months I have lost 20 or so pounds and recently started working out. It isn’t easy but once you start and see the results it’s hard to stop. Looking back at old photos or checking the waist line on your old pants is a great way to stay motivated. I hope this expose inspires you to Start or Keep Going.
1) Lori, thanks for agreeing to do this. I know it must be difficult to talk about at times, but I wanted to share your success story with the world. Can you tell us about your journey?
2) Wow, that is amazing! At what point did you realize that you HAD to make a change in your life and how did you find the WILL and DESIRE to change your habits?
5) Since you like to pause and look back to see where you don’t want to be again, have you considered starting a blog to help motivate others by sharing how you have overcome your greatest challenges. How has this reflection helped you.
6) Where can our readers find out more about you and see your transformation?

Who is Wilford Raney “@BillyBadBird” – Over 1 Billion Views (Like McDonalds) #ProllyEvenMore
Posted: July 21, 2011 | Author: fc3arch | Filed under: Photography, Social Media | Tags: Big Texas, BillyBadBird, Birds, Exclusive, Expose, media, Photographs, Port Bolivar, Social, Social Media, Texas, Twitter, TX, WHO IS | 37 Comments »I have made a few “interesting” connections over the years and I am going to “expose” some of them to you. For my first “Exposé” I chose a special social media friend (or maybe he chose me).
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
All photos taken by Wilford Raney.
I have been friends with Mr. Raney for quite some time now. We first met on Twitter and are now connected throughout the web. Wilford, or as I like to call him, Billy, is a unique fellow who I have come to admire because of his good nature and pleasant nature. He becomes a friend to everyone he meets. People from all over the world interact with “Billybadbird” (Billy’s Twitter handle on Twitter) on a daily basis. Somehow he finds time for his fans and friends in between his daily routine of watching/feeding the birds, cleaning up the local beaches in Port Bolivar, Texas, and photographing the majestic scenes he encounters living next to the Gulf.
Raney’s parents moved back to Houston Texas right after his father finished serving in the air force in Bossier City (where Billy was born). The family always spent summers and weekends at the beach. Eventually, his mother and father relocated the family in the 70′s to, as he says, “get his children out of the city and away from drugs and temptation” but Billy seems to think that it was more a tactical decision.
“My father loves the ocean just as much as we do… Once you get here it’s very hard to leave.”
Billy goes on to say:
“Our family has always loved birds… My grandfather (also named Wilford Raney) left the city for the country after he retired. He had a great big window in the great room and when he became bound to the wheelchair he spent his days in front of the window watching the birds. It gave him great pleasure. My mother believes in waste not want not – so everytime she cooked – all the scraps went outside to the birds. That was a practice I continued when I moved into my little ocean front cottage – the birds started staying so I started cooking for them – the same as I do today – I make rice cakes — twice a day — I cook 6 cups of rice - let it cool then turn it upside down on a plate –”
I asked Billy who has nearly 12K followers about when he started tweeting:
“I have been tweeting about two years – I don’t know how I started or why.” I only retweet people I follow who follow me - I make very few exceptions to this rule- and I have this rule be fair to people who promote me. I am grateful for their support…. I am grateful for everyone’s support -but I also must remain fair to everyone.”

Anyone who knows Billy from Facebook, Twitter, or visiting his website knows that he has been through some tramatic experiences living on the coast. He was weathered some difficult storms.
“We are in our third year without a storm – this is making everyone nervous. We average two a year – a few years back we had three hurricanes back to back. The worst times for storms for us is August and September when the ocean is very, very warm — but some of the earlier seasonal storms hit us too. Allison was a tropical storm that stalled for several and flooded Houston – Alicia was a hurricane – she really messed things up. My worst experience was Ike — I lost two homes and the property which now lies in the ocean. I was trapped. I almost died. We went 4 months without water and lights – the island was deserted. I stayed — I cannot leave.”
Billy recounted a typical day in Port Bolivar, Texas:
“I clean up the beaches for God and the birds. One day I went outside to a seagull in my yard who had fishing line tangled in his wings. He was scared of me but he needed help – it broke my heart – I cried for many hours – I had to trap him with a net but eventually I was able to save him – the last thing before Ike — I kept seeing a pelican in front of the house — when he moved he was wobbling and tripping — I had to chase him in the ocean to catch him — he also was tangled in the fishing line — the hook was in his foot — I carried him to a neighbor — we cut him free and he flew away — then the storm came – I will always remember that - I clean up everything that can cause a bird his life – prevention….. I wrote a poem about this. We have about 1500 people year long – the island is 22 miles in the middle of the ocean – you can only get here by ferry boat – probably 30 to 40,000 people come for holidays – maybe a whole bunch more — people are everywhere during the summer – winter is for us. Quiet
Peaceful – you can walk for miles on the beach and never see a soul.”
Is It Time to Unfriend Them on Facebook?

There comes a time when you have to do some Facebook housecleaning. Your News Feed has become clogged with updates from “friends” you barely know and somehow you’ve been included in message chains you have zero desire to be on. Sure, at one time you wanted the most friends possible to prove to cyberspace that you were king of the internet, but that feeling has faded and now you just want to stay in touch with a more select crew. Here’s how to decide who gets the boot:

Ideas about SOCIAL MEDIA (for Architects and Other Professionals) by @FrankCunhaIII
Posted: July 10, 2011 | Author: fc3arch | Filed under: Social Media | Tags: Architects, Facebook, Flickr, linkedin, Manifesto, marketing, online, professionals, retweets, RT, shout-out, SO, Social Media, Tumblr, tweets, Twitter, youtube | 9 Comments »Unfortunately, Architecture is not the Football star of the social media world.

Here are a few suggestions if you want to obtain more followers and reach a wider audience using social media:
1) There are no key words that I know of to find potential/future clients, developers, and builders so I consider everyone I meet a potential contact – present or future – so I follow most people back. So don’t just follow the professional organizations, other Architects, and allied professionals, instead broaden your fan/follower base.
2) Become the Go-To Guy / Gal for Architecture (or your profession) within your own social network (be it LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Tumblr, etc). I get all sorts of emails related to the profession which leads me to believe that the people I associate with and see me tweet about Architecture associate me as an “expert” in the field.
3) Expand. Don’t just tweet / post about Architecture. My father tweets about Sports and gets 10 times more hits on his blog than I get. This means that some professions like Architecture have less appeal, so tweet / post about other things you enjoy, be it art, music, culture, etc.
4) Change your tone – I like to post about hanging out with my children or visiting my family when I am on Facebook and Twitter. LinkedIn I try to keep more professional. I think it is fun and benefitical to show your personal side, but just be aware of what you are posting where. Try to keep your posts on LinkedIn more professional (i.e., related to the industry or allied industries, like Real Estate, Energy Conservation, Codes, etc for Architects) and be more personable on Facebook and Twitter.
5) Don’t forget to recommend and connect people within your network. I was very excited when I recently saw that a fellow Architect member of the Architects LEague connected a photographer to another Architect member in our group. Everybody wins when you are able to connect two or more folks. Make Social Media work for you by making these connections possible.
6) Don’t be scared to send a shout-out to your Followers on Twitter. People want to be mentioned. Whether you include others in a tweet about a story you saw or whether you include someone on a quotation you found people will want to interact with you more and be more engaging if you engage them. So far the only people who have complained about me tweeting too much or not wanting to be mentioned (ironically) have been other Architects. Everyone else I have encountered online has ben grateful when they are mentioned and 9 times out of 10 they will retweet my post so my message is reached even further to their followers.
7) Who do you want to emulate? Make sure you check out and follow other professionals who you see as your competition or colleagues so that you can learn from their success. Retweet / repost what they send out and be sure to enage in a dialog with them even if it is just clicking the like button or posting a short message. Trust me, as someone who knows, I absolutely appreciate and value those who interact with me.
Hope these help you make the most of your experience online and I hope you share your ideas with me as well.

Below is a video pictorial of some of my current artwork. I hope you enjoy viewing it as much as I did preparing it.
The summer solstice occurs exactly when the Earth’s axial tilt is most inclined towards the sun at its maximum of 23° 26′. Though the summer solstice is an instant in time, the term is also colloquially used like Midsummer to refer to the day on which it occurs. Except in the polar regions (where daylight is continuous for many months during the spring and summer), the day on which the summer solstice occurs is the day of the year with the longest period of daylight. Thus the seasonal significance of the Summer solstice is in the reversal of the gradual shortening of nights and lengthening of days. The summer solstice occurs in June in the Northern Hemisphere and in December in the Southern Hemisphere.

Everyone has heard about Social Media but some might wonder if it is right for their firm. Traditional marketing methods include attending weekly Rotary or Chamber of Commerce meetings, sponsoring non-profit or trade show events, and entering award competitions for that third party validation. Social Media marketing does not take the place of your traditional marketing methods—you still need to get out of your office and meet people—but Social Media expands your reach. Social media builds communities of people with shared interests, with a focus on networking and conversation. Before you start you need to identify precise, measurable objectives to obtain your goal. Identifying your objectives for social media is critical. If you are just on Facebook and Twitter because everyone else is, you might have some interesting conversations while you waste a lot of time.
