The Monarch – The Wanderer

It is perhaps the best known of all North American butterflies. Since the 19th century, it has been found in New Zealand, and in Australia since 1871 where it is called the “Wanderer.”
In Europe, it is resident in the Canary Islands, the Azores, and Madeira, and is found as an occasional migrant in Western Europe. Its wings feature an easily recognizable orange and black pattern, with a wingspan of 8.9–10.2 centimetres (3½–4 in).
The Viceroy butterfly has a similar size, color, and pattern, but can be distinguished by an extra black stripe across the hind wing. Female Monarchs have darker veins on their wings, and the males have a spot called the “androconium” in the center of each hind wing from which pheromones are released. Males are also slightly larger.

From a thousand miles they came to see the show,
The nighttime sky was slowly beginning to glow,
The lights shown bright, oh what a sight,
They sat snuck together, nice and tight,
It felt right after such a long flight,
Try not to think of saying good night.
Just sit right back and enjoy the view,
Cause they all knew, these days are few,
Just sit right back and enjoy the craze,
Before the velvet curtains are raised,
The soft white snow began to accrue,
No one cared, they weren’t subdued,
They all knew, these days are few,
They laughed and mused at the stage anew,
The greatest show of their age revived,
Just then they knew they had arrived,
Buzz— Swoosh— Boo—

The Arrival
They came from many miles around to see the show,
The nighttime sky was slowly beginning to glow,
The lights shown bright, what a sight,
They sat close together, nice and tight,
It felt right after such a long flight,
Try not to think of when it is time to go,
Just sit right back and enjoy the show,
They all knew, these days are few,
Just sit right back and enjoy the show,
Before the velvet curtains drew,
The soft white snow began to accrue,
No one cared, they weren’t scared,
They all knew, these days are few,
They laughed and mused at the stage,
The greatest show of their age,
Just then they knew they had arrived,
Buzz— Swoosh— Moo—

I was fortunate enough to be assigned to a wonderful project building a new state-of-the-art music facility named after Mr. Cali.
Mr. & Mrs. Cali are fascinating individuals whose vision and contributions made the new Music School project
a tremendous success. On one of the building tours I snapped these two quick shots of Mr. Cali. More Info here.

As past president of the AIA Architects League, I am responsible to host a gala dinner for Ben this weekend so he has been on my mind often this week. I want to make sure I do not let him down for his big day where we install him as our 2011 President. This portrait was captured at the AIA NJ East Coast Green Convention held in Atlantic City last September. I love how this image captures Ben’s humility, humor, integrity, and optimism all in one shot.
